Feasts and Solemnities

Ash Wednesday and the days of Holy Week override all Feasts and Solemnities.
Feasts and Solemnities are celebrated as usual on the weekdays of Lent.

Memorials

Memorials are optional in Lent and may be omitted or observed as commemorations.

Commemorations of Memorials in Lent (GILH #239b.)

If you wish to observe a Memorial during Lent at Morning Prayer or Evening Prayer use the following procedure:

The ending of the concluding prayer is omitted and the saint's antiphon (from the Proper or the Common), and the prayer of the saint is added.

Example: March 4

The ending of the concluding prayer for the day is omitted (i.e. the part that goes something like this: "We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ..." )

The antiphon for St. Casimir is added:

"The man of God welcomes the light that searches his deeds and find them true."

The prayer of St. Casimir is added:

All-powerful God,
to serve you is to reign:
by the prayers of Saint Casimir,
help us to serve you in holiness and justice.
Grant this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Antiphon in Honor of the Blessed Virgin for Night Prayer

Ave Regina Caelorum (play the chant)

Ave, Regina caelorum,
Ave, Domina angelorum,
salve, radix, salve, porta,
ex qua mundo lux est orta.

Gaude, Virgo gloriosia,
super omnes speciosa;
vale, o valde decora,
et pro nobis Christum exora.

Hail Queen of heaven enthroned,
Hail by all the angels mistress owned!
Hail root of Jesse, Gate of Morn!
Through whom the world’s true light was born.

O glorious Virgin, joy to thee,
Loveliest of creatures born to be.
High above all worldly station,
Bring to Jesus our supplication.

Marian Prayer for Lent
(see Lam 2:13)

V.    To what shall I compare thee,
Or to what shall I liken thee,
R.    O daughter of Jerusalem?

Hail Mary . . .

V.    To what shall I equal thee,
        that I may comfort thee,
R.    O Virgin daughter of Sion?

Hail Mary . . .

V.    For great as the sea
        is thy destruction,
R.    Who shall heal thee?

Hail Mary . . .

Pray for us O Holy Mother of God -
That we may be made worthy
of the promises of Christ.

Father,
as your Son was raised on the cross,
his mother Mary stood by him,
sharing his sufferings.
May Your Church be united with Christ
in his suffering and death
and so come to share
in his rising to new life,
where he lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever.
